The final of Wales’s largest kids’ martial arts league will be held at the Western Leisure Centre in Cardiff on 13 November 2016. Well over 120 junior athletes are expected to compete in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) at the Welsh Kids’ BJJ League, which runs alongside the Celtic BJJ Open tournament for adults.

The IBJJF World Masters Championship 2016 was held on August 25th to August 27th in Las Vegas, Nevada. A local businessman has helped a young girl take the next step on her sporting career Shannon Williams (aged 9) from Sutton in Ashfield was recently given the surprise of her life when a businessman decided to sponsor her with £250 towards her Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training. Neil Lack of Alfreton Insurance Services made the gesture because he could see the future potential of the young star.

The UK Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Association (UKBJJA) has strengthened its position as the national governing body for the sport of BJJ in the UK. Thanks to a formal request by the UKBJJA, an organisation set up by members of the British Judo Association in an attempt to claim jurisdiction over the sport has had to change its name from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu UK Association to the BJJ UK Council (BJJUKC).

At a gym in Bristol a group of grapplers spent 24 hours of their Easter weekend on the mats doing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the name of charity. Artemis BJJ, a member club of the UKBJJA, hosted a GrappleThon and raised £3000 for local charity One25, which supports vulnerable women, helping them to break free and build new lives away from violence, poverty and addiction.

Tomorrow the University of Nottingham will play host to a landmark event in university sports, the first UKBJJA University BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) League Competition. Around 100 competitors, male and female, will be travelling from universities across the UK to compete in gi and no gi divisions. BJJ is the newest official addition to the roster of martial arts in the British military. But the display of BJJ at the weekend continues a century-old tradition of Jiu Jitsu in the armed forces dating back to an officer and showman Captain Leopold McLaglen.
