A Southampton man has just been awarded a coveted black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu despite a spinal condition that could have left him crippled. On 4 December, 2016 Graham Day (44) from Southampton was awarded his black belt in the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), despite a debilitating degenerative spinal condition that could have left him in a wheelchair.

On 30 November, members of the British Army Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Team sparred for 1000 rounds in 24 hours to raise money for PTSD The British Army BJJ team started their marathon effort in Farnborough, Colchester and Catterick. The event was to raise money for Combat Stress – a military charity that supports service personnel and their families.

On November 1st, Pedro Besa BJJ Rhondda hosted a very special visitor for a seminar in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Fernando Augusto “Tererê” is a 7 time world champion in the sport and a legend in his home country of Brazil. He was in Wales to deliver a seminar and raise money for the Tererê Kids’ Project – a charity set up to help poor kids in the Favelas of Rio de Janeiro via the sport of BJJ.

The final of Wales’s largest kids’ martial arts league will be held at the Western Leisure Centre in Cardiff on 13 November 2016. Well over 120 junior athletes are expected to compete in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) at the Welsh Kids’ BJJ League, which runs alongside the Celtic BJJ Open tournament for adults.

Billy Hayes is 14 years old and attends Grey Court School in Ham, Surrey.

The UK Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Association (UKBJJA) has strengthened its position as the national governing body for the sport of BJJ in the UK. Thanks to a formal request by the UKBJJA, an organisation set up by members of the British Judo Association in an attempt to claim jurisdiction over the sport has had to change its name from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu UK Association to the BJJ UK Council (BJJUKC).

At a gym in Bristol a group of grapplers spent 24 hours of their Easter weekend on the mats doing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the name of charity. Artemis BJJ, a member club of the UKBJJA, hosted a GrappleThon and raised £3000 for local charity One25, which supports vulnerable women, helping them to break free and build new lives away from violence, poverty and addiction.

Tomorrow the University of Nottingham will play host to a landmark event in university sports, the first UKBJJA University BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) League Competition. Around 100 competitors, male and female, will be travelling from universities across the UK to compete in gi and no gi divisions.
