On 16 December 2018, Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility in Motherwell hosted some of the best Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) competitors in the world at the 1st UKBJJA International Open Tournament. Ticket sales and a generous donation of prize money by Black Belt Masters gold medallist and UKBJJA Chairman Richard Martin, meant that the event raised £882 for Cash4Kids Mission Christmas.

The UK Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Association (UKBJJA) has strengthened its position as the national governing body for the sport of BJJ in the UK. Thanks to a formal request by the UKBJJA, an organisation set up by members of the British Judo Association in an attempt to claim jurisdiction over the sport has had to change its name from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu UK Association to the BJJ UK Council (BJJUKC).

At a gym in Bristol a group of grapplers spent 24 hours of their Easter weekend on the mats doing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the name of charity. Artemis BJJ, a member club of the UKBJJA, hosted a GrappleThon and raised £3000 for local charity One25, which supports vulnerable women, helping them to break free and build new lives away from violence, poverty and addiction.

Tomorrow the University of Nottingham will play host to a landmark event in university sports, the first UKBJJA University BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) League Competition. Around 100 competitors, male and female, will be travelling from universities across the UK to compete in gi and no gi divisions. The UKBJJA has pledged to promote the sport at university level with the aim of BUCS recognition.

A talented youngster from Beckenham, Nia Blackman took home gold this weekend at the IBJJF Kids Pan Ams, the biggest junior BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) tournament for juniors in the world. In the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach California, Nia, who is one of the top junior yellow belts in the sport in the UKBJJA rankings and trains at New School BJJ Battesea, saw off the opposition in style to win.
